Meroddi takes its name from the noble Genoese family De Merude (Merode or Merodii in some sources), mentioned in the inscription of the only gate of Galata's 14th-century walls to survive to this day. According to this inscription on Yanıkkapı Street, the gate was commissioned by the noble families of the era, the D'Auria and De Merude families; the coats of arms of both families can still be seen on the inscription today. Meroddi keeps alive the name of this neighbouring heritage, carved in stone for seven centuries just a few hundred metres away from us.
